Meet Perry, the Co-Therapy Dog
Perry is a six-year-old Retriever who is my co-therapist joining alongside in some sessions. Animal Assisted Therapy is an approach that encompasses the power of the animal-human bond to help foster positive mental health outcomes for children and adolescents.
Safety and welfare of all clients being supported through animal assisted therapy.
Animal safety guidelines for ethical practice with a therapy dog are maintained at all times. Perry will only be available for a limited number of sessions at the clinic; it is important to know if this may change at any time should this be in the animal’s best interest.
This will be communicated to clients, in understanding of therapy animals’ rights and well-being which are to be agreed upon when acceptance of this service is offered to families.
Lindsey Matkovich
HeartConnect Psychology recommends Lindsey for her work with children, youth, and families.
Lindsey Matkovich is a Registered Counselling Therapist (ACTA #3044) who has been helping children, youth, and families since 2016. She holds a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University and is passionate about helping children build emotional resilience, strengthen relationships, and develop the skills they need to thrive.
Throughout her career, Lindsey has worked in community mental health, family violence prevention, crisis intervention, and school-based counselling. Her extensive experience supporting children and families has provided her with a deep understanding of the challenges that can impact on a child’s emotional well-being, behavior, social connections, and sense of self.
Lindsey works with children experiencing anxiety, emotional regulation difficulties, stress, trauma, grief and loss, self-esteem concerns, family transitions, attachment challenges, and behavioral difficulties. She also recognizes that when a child is struggling, the entire family can be affected. As a result, she partners closely with parents and caregivers to strengthen family relationships and create supportive environments where children can flourish.
Her practice integrates attachment-based, strength-based, solution-focused, cognitive behavioral, play-based, expressive arts, and animal-assisted therapeutic approaches, tailoring each session to the unique needs of the child and family.
Lindsey has completed specialized training in trauma-informed practice, expressive arts therapy, animal-assisted therapy, suicide intervention, and attachment. She is committed to ongoing professional development to ensure the care she provides remains evidence-informed, compassionate, and effective.
Whether supporting a child struggling with big emotions, helping a family navigate a significant life transition, or working with parents seeking tools to better understand and support their child, Lindsey strives to create a warm, welcoming space where children feel safe, valued, and empowered to grow.
Lindsey lives on a rural property outside of Calgary with her husband and teenage son, alongside her horses, goat, cat, and dog.
I believe every child has unique strengths and the capacity for growth, healing, and resilience. My role is to create a safe and supportive space where children can build confidence, develop healthy coping skills, and feel understood, while partnering with caregivers to foster connection and lasting positive change.
